Camping/Biking Trip - Day #3 RACE DAY

Start of Race!!
The family hanging out after dads first lap.

12 Hours of Mesa Verde started at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Shawn competed in a two man team with Jeff Martinez. Shawn started with the first loop. They started this race with a 1/4 mile run before the riders got on their bike to head off to the trail. Someone told me they do this to spread the riders out, nevertheless, it looked kind of funny to see all of these bikers running!!! Shawn rode his first lap in close to an hour and a half. Shawn and Jeff ended up riding that 16 mile loop 4 times each. The last rider had to be out before 6 p.m. that night. Shawn pulled in at 5:55 for Jeff to ride his 4th time, it was exciting because it was getting a little close. There team ended up coming in 8th place out of 39 two man teams. There were all sorts of riders in this race. Solo riders, single speed riders, two man teams, three man teams, and four man teams. We were so proud of Shawn. There were times that Shawn and Jeff both looked pretty exhausted, but they pulled through and did a great job. Good job guys!!!

We had fun seeing Shawn off and cheering him when he came in. They had tons of activities for kids too. They had a kids bike race (which Cruz got a medal from), face painting, craft projects, and a kids rodeo ride. Cruz had a blast. With grandpa and grandma helping I was able to sneak away for a couple hours and get a road ride in with Monica. We rode over to Mesa Verde park and then into the park. It was such a fun ride.

Near the end of the race they had celebrations going on in this large barn area where the riders would check in. At the end of the day they had a DJ up on stage playing music. Earlier in the day Cruz was having fun running around on the stage. He decided to go up on the stage this time and dance to the dj's music. I wasn't there but I saw the video and it was soooooo funny.

Shawn and I went into Cortez to the rec. center for a much needed shower that night. I wanted to take the kids but they were so tired by that point, plus they could care less if they were completely filthy!
